School Administrators of Iowa announced that David Olson, director of secondary education for the Dubuque Community School District, was named a finalist for the 2014 Iowa Central Office Administrator of the Year award.

“We are pleased to recognize school leaders who are committed to excellence in education,” said Dan Smith, SAI executive director.

Olson was nominated by his peers and will be recognized at SAI’s Annual Conference August 6 in Des Moines along with award recipient Mary Ellen Maske of Cedar Rapids and additional nominees. In support of the nomination, comments from Olson’s colleagues included:

  • “David always has a collaborative tone and is student centered.”
  • “He … has a clear vision of the big picture of education and how all the parts fit together.”
  • “David doesn’t just lead and innovate; he creates leaders and innovators.”

Director of secondary education in Dubuque since July 2008, Olson previously served as principal of Hempstead High School for 10 years and prior to that was the principal of Central Alternative High School for eight years. He has been in the Dubuque Community School District for the past 31 years.

SAI, a statewide organization founded in 1987, represents more than 2,000 Iowa educational administrators. SAI’s mission is to enhance PreK-12 education through effective leadership by school administrators.
