Jefferson and Washington to Host 100th Anniversary Open Houses, Oct. 1

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of each school, Jefferson Middle School and Washington Middle School will host community open houses on Sunday, Oct. 1, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at each school. The community is invited to attend.

During the open houses, community members will have the chance to tour areas of the school, interact with student representatives and school staff, and view historical memorabilia. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to sign a commemorative item recognizing the anniversary.

In 1921, the Dubuque Community School District Board of Education called for construction of two new junior high schools – ultimately becoming Washington and Jefferson. The schools were both constructed during 1922 and opened in 1923.

Today, Jefferson serves approximately 460 students and Washington serves approximately 630 students, all in grades six through eight.

Community Information Session on Facility Planning, May 1

The Dubuque Community School District will host a community information meeting focused on its facility planning efforts on Monday, May 1, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Forum, 2300 Chaney Road.

The meeting will feature a discussion on projects that may be included in a potential September bond referendum. The largest project would involve constructing a new middle school on the site of the current Washington Middle School. This would give the district two modern middle schools of similar size and amenities rather than continuing to operate two smaller, 100-year-old, less-efficient buildings.

This project would save the district an estimated $3.4 million in annual operating costs, and voters could approve a bond referendum with no increase to the district’s overall tax levy rate.

Additional projects from the district’s 10-year facility plan include adding air conditioning to buildings that still need full climate control; the construction of a baseball and softball complex with lights, restrooms and concessions; acquiring land for a potential future elementary school; and a gymnasium addition to Eisenhower Elementary, as it is the district’s only elementary school of its size without both a dedicated lunch/multipurpose room and a gym.

At the meeting, the team from INVISION Architecture leading the study will provide an update on projects. Tim Oswald from Piper Sandler will explain the funding mechanism needed to accomplish the project, along with its potential impact on property taxes.

2021 Graduation Update

Dear Parents/Guardians of the Class of 2021,

In just a few short months, your student in the Class of 2021 will walk across the stage to receive their Dubuque Community School District diploma – proudly becoming a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School or Hempstead High School.

While we continue to move closer to normal, we will again make adjustments to this year’s graduation ceremony to ensure that we are providing a safe environment for our students and their families.

  • The most significant change is that the ceremony will be held outdoors at Dalzell Field in order to provide additional capacity while also allowing for appropriate physical distancing.
  • As scheduled, graduation will be held on Saturday, May 29, and we will use Sunday, May 30, as a rain date should weather present an issue on Saturday.
  • Dubuque Senior High School’s ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. and Hempstead High School’s ceremony will be held at 3 p.m.
  • Based on the capacity of Dalzell Field, each graduate may receive up to eight (8) tickets. WATCH YOUR EMAIL IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS FOR TICKET RESERVATION DETAILS.
  • We will again livestream the graduation ceremonies for family and friends who are unable to attend the ceremony in person.

Additional details about logistics, safety protocols and ticketing will be shared as our graduation planning continues.

We are excited to be able to hold an in-person celebration of the Class of 2021. Best wishes as your student completes the remainder of their senior year!

Sincerely,
Stan Rheingans
Superintendent of Schools

Ticket Information for IHSAA Postseason Events

The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) will utilize HomeTown Ticketing as the exclusive ticket provider for postseason lead-up events and select state tournament events.

Therefore, tickets for postseason basketball games hosted by Senior and Hempstead WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE through HomeTown Ticketing.

This includes the following games:

  • Dubuque Senior Boys Basketball on Monday, February 22
  • Hempstead Boys Basketball on Friday, February 26

Each school will provide a link to participants where family members can purchase a limited number of tickets for the game. Additionally, students will be provided with a separate link where they can purchase a ticket for the game.

Due to spectator limitations we anticipate that there will be NO general admission tickets available to the general public.

  • If general admission tickets would become available, the district will put a HomeTown Ticketing link on the official district Facebook and Twitter pages on game day for individuals to purchase a ticket.

NOTE: The digital ticket purchased through HomeTown Ticketing is the only ticket that will be accepted for these contests.
