Kindergartners from Carver Elementary School participated in their own election today — voting for their favorite pet.
Complete with a platform of issues, each candidate presented their case and students headed to the polls. Just like at real polling places, the students signed in (which is good writing practice!) and verified their address (another important thing to know!).
Then, they headed to the voting booth to cast their ballot. Today, these young students learned a lesson about our democracy and reinforced skills they are learning each day. In the end, everyone was a winner!
The October edition of Digital Fringe, an online gallery of student art in the Dubuque Community School District, is now live!

This gallery is a way to highlight the remarkable products of art education in the district. It’s a digital attempt at bringing the work of our student artists at all levels into your home – because art is created for others to take in.
While yellow school buses are common, it’s not everyday a helicopter lands at school.
On Friday, Oct. 28, Mercy Medical Center – Dubuque’s AirCare 3 helicopter landed at Hoover Elementary School to the delight of students. The flight crew then talked to students about the helicopter and their work, with students having an opportunity to sit in the helicopter.
The aircraft joined Engine Company 502 from the Dubuque Fire Department, which provided fire safety information and vehicle tours to students.
Thanks to both Mercy Medical Center and the Dubuque Fire Department for an exciting morning at Hoover!
