Former U.S. Defense Secretary Commends Roosevelt Students on North Korea Research
It just so happened that two recent claims by North Korea regarding nuclear weaponry have coincided with related topics in Roosevelt Middle School teacher Peter Knutson’s eighth-grade science class. Most recently, garnering a response from former United States Secretary of Defense William J. Perry.

ALC Economics Class Creates ‘Key City Coops’
Students in an economics class at the Alternative Learning Center aren’t spending all day cooped up in their classroom. Instead, they are bringing their class work to life by creating “Key City Coops,” a school business building and selling chicken coops and chicken tractors.

Dubuque Senior Speech Team Earns All-State Honors
The Dubuque Senior High School Speech Team upheld its reputation as a speech powerhouse on February 20 during the Iowa High School Speech Association Large Group All-State Festival held at Iowa State University.
The Senior team claimed three Critic’s Choice Banners for outstanding performances of the festival in Ensemble Acting, One Act Play and Solo Mime. The team also received the E. Wayne Cooley Sweepstakes Trophy, awarded to the school that qualifies the most performing entries for the All-State Festival.
The varsity team accomplished this by qualifying an IHSSA state record of 17 performing events (plus two non-performing). In addition, the Senior ninth grade team qualified 5 events (2 performing, 3 non-performing).

Senior/Hempstead Substate Game Location Changed
The substate final between Dubuque Senior High School and Hempstead High School tomorrow, Tuesday, March 1, has been moved to Maquoketa High School at 7 p.m. The game was previously scheduled to be played at Davenport North. The winner will advance to the state tournament.
#LetsGetReal Summit on Healthy Teen Relationships
During National Teen Dating Violence Awareness month in February, the Dubuque Community School District will to host 150 middle school students from across the district for “#LetsGetReal: A Summit on Healthy Teen Relationships” on February 11.

Hempstead High School Named State’s Best School Recycling Program
Hempstead High School was recently named recipient of the Iowa Award for Excellence in Recycling (Best School Recycling Program) given by the Iowa Recycling Association. Representatives from Hempstead’s Green Team received the award on July 23 at the association’s annual luncheon. The group was nominated for the award by Bev Wagner, education coordinator for the Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency, who was also named the state’s Recycler of the Year at the event.
