Johll to Become Next Roosevelt Middle School Principal

news-johll-jeffThe Dubuque Community School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Jeff Johll as the new principal of Roosevelt Middle School beginning in the 2016-2017 school year, pending approval by the Board of Education at its April 11 meeting. An experienced educational administrator, Johll has served as assistant principal at Roosevelt since 2005.

As principal of Roosevelt, Johll will be responsible for the strategic and day-to-day operations of the school, which serves approximately 1,160 students and 145 professional and support staff.

2016 Kindergarten Welcome Events

Preparing for kindergarten is an exciting time for children and parents alike. To help ease the transition, many schools in the Dubuque Community School District will host a Kindergarten Welcome Events/Open House to allow students and families get acquainted with their school and its staff in preparation for the 2016-17 school year.

At the event, attendees will meet the school’s kindergarten teachers, the school principal and other school staff. There will be an overview of the school as well as overview of the registration process.

‘Sole Hope’ Service Activity at Lincoln Elementary, April 2

Lincoln Elementary School will host a ‘Sole Hope’ service activity on Saturday, April 2, from 9-11 a.m. in the school’s gymnasium. At the event, participants will begin the process of making shoes for children in Uganda, with the goal of reducing the incidence of chigger bites when the children are barefoot.

Members of the Dubuque community are invited to participate and can RSVP by calling Lincoln Elementary School at (563)552-4050. A $10 donation is requested for each adult participant to help cover costs of shipping the completed shoe parts overseas and to pay the shoemaker.

Kennedy STEM Night Photos

Kennedy Elementary School hosted its Family STEM Night on March 21, organized and planned by students and faculty from the University of Dubuque. An estimated 400 students and family members from Kennedy attended this evening of hand-on activities in science, technology, engineering and math.

Former U.S. Defense Secretary Commends Roosevelt Students on North Korea Research

It just so happened that two recent claims by North Korea regarding nuclear weaponry have coincided with related topics in Roosevelt Middle School teacher Peter Knutson’s eighth-grade science class. Most recently, garnering a response from former United States Secretary of Defense William J. Perry.

ALC Economics Class Creates ‘Key City Coops’

Students in an economics class at the Alternative Learning Center aren’t spending all day cooped up in their classroom. Instead, they are bringing their class work to life by creating “Key City Coops,” a school business building and selling chicken coops and chicken tractors.
